A stranger at game night said my rules explanation was awful, turns out they were right

Last month I hosted a game night for about 8 people and I was so hyped to teach them this heavier Euro game I love. I went through every phase, scoring detail, and edge case in one long run, thinking I was being thorough. One guy, Dave, finally cut me off and said "nobody can follow this, just tell us how to win and we'll learn the rest as we go." So I changed to explaining only the objective and the basic turn action, then stopped talking. That one change cut our setup time by 15 minutes and everyone actually got into the game way faster, have any of you tried the "just the win condition" method for teaching complex games?
