A friend told me my game explanations were too long, so I timed myself and cut them from 8 minutes down to 3
Now people actually want to play instead of just nodding politely, and I haven't lost a single rule yet.

Oh, I have to disagree. An 8 minute explanation can be great if your group actually likes the lore and worldbuilding.

This is the hard truth most of us need to hear. Players don't want a novel before they roll dice, they just want to know what their character sees and what they can do right now. Cutting that down from 8 minutes to 3 is smart because you're respecting their time and keeping the energy high. Bet your table is way more engaged too, since nobody is zoning out halfway through your setup. That's the real win.
