A chat with my niece about board game nights made me feel old

She's 16 and asked me why we still have a 'game closet' when you can just play anything on a phone. I told her about our old group that would meet every Friday for 8 years straight, with the same worn copy of Ticket to Ride. She said it sounded like a lot of work just to hang out. It hit me that the social part, the shared pizza and arguing over rules, was the whole point for us. Do younger folks still value that kind of planned, in-person gathering for games?

Maybe it's not about age but about how you're raised. Her generation had playdates, not just free time to figure out out.

So what did she think the point of hanging out was, if not the social part?

Got caught explaining to my niece that the pizza stains on our Monopoly board are basically a historical record of friendship. Tried to make it sound cool, just sounded like I was describing a museum exhibit from 1995. Guess I'll go yell at a cloud now.
