Watched a 40 year old anvil go from rusty junk to glass smooth in 3 Saturdays
Picked up a beat up 150 pound Peter Wright anvil at a farm auction near Hastings for $80, and the face was pitted and rusty enough that hammer marks showed up in everything I forged on it. Over 3 weekends I hit it with a wire wheel, then flap discs, and finally spent about an hour each session polishing with a worn out 220 grit stone, and now hot steel glides off it clean. The difference in my hammer control is wild, I can actually feel where the metal is moving instead of fighting the pits. Anyone here ever resurfaced an old anvil and regretted taking off too much of the face plate?
