Wasted $80 on a cheap anvil off Craigslist that rang like a bell

I picked up a cast iron anvil from some guy near Tulsa for $80. Looked fine in the photos but the second I hit it, the ring was deafening and the rebound was terrible. Took me three days of trying to quiet it with chains and magnets before I realized the face was already dented up. I could have saved that money and put it toward a proper forged anvil from a supplier I know now. Has anyone else gotten burned buying used anvils without testing them in person first?

Yeah the "looked fine in the photos" part got me too. I learned to always ask for a video of someone hitting it before driving out, saved me a two hour trip once. Made the seller on OfferUp send me one and you could hear the ring clear as day.

Stopped reading at "OfferUp" just to take a breath. @mia748 you got lucky they even sent a video. Most sellers on there act like you're asking for their social security number if you want proof it works. Had a dude get legit mad at me once for asking if the amp had original packaging.
