Splitting my forge fire into two small piles fixed my heat problem
For about 6 months my 1095 blades kept coming out with soft spots near the tip, and I could not figure out why. Last week I stopped running one big coal bed and made two smaller piles on either side of the blade, then moved the steel between them. The even heat got rid of the soft spots by my next 3 quenches, and I kick myself for not trying it way sooner. Has anyone else had luck with a split fire like this, or do you run a single pile and just move the steel faster?
