Showerthought: That $30 propane forge burner kit I almost bought from a guy in Alabama actually works better than my old forced air setup
A buddy at the shop talked me into trying one three months ago and after 50 knives the heat is way more even and it uses less gas, has anyone else had good luck with those cheap kits or did I just get lucky?

My thirty dollar burner sputters like crazy and I've never gotten a clean heat out of it.

Oh man, that is EXACTLY what happened with mine too! I got one from a little hardware store for like twenty-five bucks and it was just a nightmare from day one. It would sputter and pop and I swear the flame was more orange than blue no matter what I did. I tried cleaning the nozzle with a pin, messing with the air adjustment, all that stuff, and it still ran like garbage. I ended up just tossing it after a couple months because I was so sick of fighting with it to get a decent flame for my projects.

A buddy of mine grabbed a cheap torch from a flea market and it was basically a fire hazard from the start. He said it hissed like a snake and shot out this weird yellow flame that left soot all over his workbench. He finally gave up and bought a name brand one after he burned his knuckles trying to adjust it.
