My old coal forge finally gave out on me last Tuesday
The firepot cracked right down the middle during a long session working on a gate hinge. I was able to finish the piece by moving everything to my buddy's propane forge across town. Has anyone had luck welding a cast iron firepot back together, or is it time to just build a new one from scratch?

Patriciareed's angle iron brace is a solid short term fix to get you back to work. I used 1/2 inch steel plate bolted through the sides of my cracked pot and it held for almost a year. That extra time let me gather the right materials to cast a proper replacement without rushing the job.

Forget welding that old pot, it's just gonna crack again from the heat stress. I braced mine with angle iron once as a quick fix, but you're better off pouring a new one with proper cast iron mix. Save yourself the headache and start fresh.
