Just dropped $150 on a proper respirator after a bad grinding day
My old dust mask was useless against the fine metal particles, and I spent the next day coughing. What's your go-to for lung protection when you're at the grinder?

Remember my dad trying to use a bandana for sawdust, he looked like a sad cowboy. Good on you for getting serious, that coughing is no joke. Tara_jones94 has the right idea with the seal, that's the whole game with a grinder. My cheap mask fogged my safety glasses so bad I almost took it off, which is a terrible plan.

Yeah, that coughing is a nasty wake-up call. I learned the hard way too. My go-to is a 3M half face respirator with P100 filters. It seals way better than a basic mask and those filters catch pretty much everything. The comfort isn't bad for longer sessions, and it feels like a solid middle ground between a cheap mask and a full blown powered air system.
