Just burned through $150 on a 'bargain' anvil that turned out to be cast iron junk.
I was so excited about the price I didn't check the ring with a hammer first, and now it's basically a very expensive doorstop (anyone know a good place in Ohio to find a decent used one?).

Cast iron anvils have their place. A quiet workshop is a huge plus if you have close neighbors. That softer face is actually kinder to your hammer and won't chip as easily, which is safer for a beginner. For basic straightening or light forming work, it's a totally fine piece of gear. You might have gotten a perfectly usable tool for the jobs you actually do.

Exactly, they're great for learning the basics.

Had a buddy who started on a cast iron anvil and he still swears by it for certain jobs, even after upgrading. Funny how those first tools stick with you.
