I swore by my old coal forge for years, but propane finally won me over
I always thought a coal forge gave better heat control for Damascus, but my buddy in Tacoma let me use his propane rig for a weekend. After making a 300-layer billet with way less scale and no smoke in my shop, I had to switch. Anyone else make the jump and find it better for pattern welding?

Honestly depends on the type of pattern you're going for. Tbh I still grab the coal forge for some really complex mosaic work, the soot can help with weld flux. For most regular Damascus though, propane is just cleaner and easier.

But doesn't the soot just make a huge mess?

Yeah, I've had the same experience with soot helping tricky welds stick.
