I finally picked coal over gas for my forge and I'm still not sure I made the right call
I've been running a little propane forge in my garage for about 3 years, and a guy named Dale from the local guild kept telling me I was missing out on coal. He sold me a used rivet forge for $150 back in March, so I gave it a shot for 6 weeks in my driveway in Bakersfield. The smell and the smoke got my neighbor complaining by day 3, but I could actually see the fire and watch the steel heat up, which helped me a lot on my tongs. I ended up going back to propane last month mostly because of the smoke, but I still miss how slow and steady the coal fire was on my knife blanks. Anyone here run both and pick one for good, or do you just keep both around depending on the job?
Ha, this is just like when I switched from my old drip coffee maker to a french press and then back again. You trade one kind of hassle for another, and the thing you gave up is always the thing you miss. I keep both setups around because some days you want quick and easy and some days you want to actually watch the thing work.
