Heard a rumor about quenching in used motor oil to save cash. Tried it on a small knife blank and the results were a disaster.

Oh man, that's a rough way to find out. Used oil has water and junk in it from the engine, which totally messes up the quench. (Learned that the hard way myself, honestly.)
