Had to pick between two anvils at a farm auction near Topeka and I went with the ugly one
Two anvils came up at a farm auction near Topeka a couple weeks back, a clean 150 lb Fisher with nice edges for around $400 and a pitted 200 lb no-name with a worn horn that nobody wanted. I picked the ugly 200 pounder for $180 because the rebound was still decent and I figured I could fix the face myself. Got it home, hit it with a flap disc, and now it rings like a bell and swallows hammer blows way better than my old one. The light pitting on the face does not bother me at all since I mostly do hooks and bottle openers anyway. Anyone else grab an ugly anvil over a pretty one at an auction and regret it?
The rebound test matters way more than looks anyway, and you basically paid scrap price for a tool that'll outlive both of us. Everyone at those auctions is bidding on paint and brand names while the real steel goes cheap.
