Had an old timer at a hammer-in in Ohio show me how to read the heat color on a blade by the shop's shadow instead of a light
He stopped me mid-quench and said 'the fire tells you everything if you stop trying to see it with your eyes' and ever since I've been using sunlight through a dusty window to gauge temp instead of my flashlight.

Three smiths told me the same thing but I still use a magnet.

Has anyone else just given up trying to argue with the experts and just do what works for you? I get so tired of hearing the "right way" when my way has been fine for years. You're not alone in sticking with the magnet, it's just simpler and who cares if it's not perfect.
