Guy at a swap meet in Abilene tried to sell me "ancient Viking forge steel" that was clearly a leaf spring
So I'm at this swap meet outside Abilene a while back, poking around a booth with some rusty tongs and a banged up anvil, and this fella in a leather apron waves me over to a table with a few bars of metal on it. He leans in real close and tells me it's ancient Viking forge steel, pulled from a dig site, and he wants 300 bucks for a bar the size of my forearm. I pick it up and it's a leaf spring. I know a leaf spring like I know my own kitchen knife, the curve, the thickness, the way it's got that rolled edge on one side. I ask him where the dig site was and he says Norway, and I ask what part, and he says the north part, and I just nod. I told him I already got a stack of leaf springs in my shed and he could have one for free if he wanted to keep playing pretend. Whole booth went quiet and his buddy behind the table started laughing so hard he had to sit down on a cooler.
Any of you ever get pitched mystery metal at a meet like that?
