Appreciation post for that old anvil I found at a farm auction

Picked up a 150-pound Peter Wright anvil for $200 at an auction near Lancaster three years ago, and after using it every day since, I’ve never seen a tool hold up that well for that cheap. Has anyone else gotten lucky with a find like that, or am I just spoiled?

Hell yeah, that's insane. @lauras83 knows what's up with old tools being way tougher than new stuff. I grabbed a beat up 180lb Hay Budden for like 150 bucks at a garage sale, face needed some work but after a grind it's been solid for years. You stole that Peter Wright honestly.

Oh man that is SUCH a score. I still remember the time I found a beat up old post vise at a flea market for like thirty bucks. The thing was caked in rust and looked like it had been sitting in a pond for a decade but I figured why not. Took it home and spent a whole weekend with a wire brush and some oil and it works PERFECTLY still. People don't realize how tough old tools really are. It's not like the cheap cast iron junk they sell now. Your Peter Wright for that price is insane honestly. Those things are like the gold standard for anvils and you basically stole it. I'm not jealous or anything but okay maybe a little.

Hits exactly on something I've been noticing more and more lately, how we're all conditioned to think newer means better when half the time it really doesn't. There's this weird thing where people toss out perfectly good stuff because they think they need the latest version, but then the old stuff just keeps going and going. Kinda makes you wonder what else we're throwing away that's actually worth holding onto.
