My brother told me to skip the first season of The Office and I'm still mad about it

My brother Tom kept insisting I should just start The Office from season 2 because season 1 is 'too cringey.' I finally listened after my third try and skipped ahead. Turns out I missed like 6 episodes of character setup and had no idea why Michael was such a mess in season 2! Now I have to go back and rewatch everything because I feel like I cheated myself out of the full experience. Has anyone else been given terrible skipping advice for a show?

See, I used to be the exact same way with shows... I'd skip the "slow" parts and jump right into where everyone said it got good. But then I did that with Breaking Bad, skipped the first few episodes, and had no clue why Walter White was even making meth in the first place. Had to go back and watch the whole thing from the start and it made a world of difference. Skipping ahead just leaves you guessing at stuff that should've been obvious from the beginning.

I mean, is it really that deep though?

Funny thing, @seth683, this reminds me of the time my cousin tried to argue that a two-hour movie wasn't "that deep" because it had a simple plot. Then we spent the next hour arguing about whether a simple plot automatically means shallow storytelling. He ended up missing the last ten minutes of the movie because he was too busy proving his point.

Used to think the same way honestly. Thought if a movie didn't have some crazy twist or complicated plot then it wasn't doing anything special. But a buddy made me watch The Straight Story and that completely flipped my head around. Simple story about an old guy riding a lawnmower to see his brother and it hit me harder than most thrillers ever could. Now I get that depth comes from how the story makes you feel not how many layers the plot has. Your cousin missing the end just proves he was more focused on being right than actually watching the damn thing.
