Just learned that the first season of 'The Wire' had a budget under $50 million
I was reading an old interview with David Simon in a Baltimore newspaper from 2002. He mentioned the entire first season cost about $48 million to make, which seems tiny now for a show that good. They had to reuse locations and keep the cast smaller than they wanted. It makes you appreciate how they pulled it off without the massive budgets we see today. What other older shows do you think did a lot with a little?

That "pure grit" line from allen.ivan reminds me of the early days of It's Always Sunny.

Wow, it's like how my old car ran forever on fumes... pure grit.

Yeah, that "pure grit" thing totally fits what samjohnson was saying about the early seasons.
