Blew $200 on that streaming box that promised way too much

Last fall I got hooked by a loud ad for one of those cheap Android streaming boxes... the kind that says it'll play everything in 4K with no buffering. I was tired of my old Fire Stick getting sluggish so I bought it off some random site for like $200 after shipping. First week it worked okay but then it started freezing during any show over 30 minutes. By month two the remote stopped pairing and I had to use a phone app just to turn it on. Customer service never answered my emails and the return policy was buried in tiny print I should've read. Ended up tossing it in a drawer and going back to my old setup which runs fine if a bit slow. Has anyone else fallen for one of those no-name boxes or found one that actually works?

$200 for a no-name streaming box is honestly a steal compared to what you'd drop on an Nvidia Shield or Apple TV that does the same thing. My buddy's had one of those cheap ones for three years now and it still runs fine.

The real problem with those cheap boxes isnt just the hardware its the firmware updates. They push out updates that break things on purpose so you buy a new one. I had one that ran fine for six months then an update killed the wifi completely. Never buying another no name streaming device again. My buddy with a Shield has had zero issues for years. You get what you pay for in this space, period.
