Spent 90 minutes on a TikTok hook that flopped in 2 hours

I was trying to break down why a dunking video from last Tuesday went viral and spent way too long crafting the perfect opening line. Turns out the algorithm didn't care about my clever setup and the post got 47 views total. Has anyone else wasted a whole evening tweaking a hook that still bombed?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree here. Spending 90 minutes on a hook isn't the problem, the problem is thinking a perfect hook is magic when it's really just one piece of a bigger puzzle. The algorithm doesn't care about your clever setup if the video itself doesn't hook people in the first 3 seconds after they land on it (and 47 views means nobody even got far enough to see the rest). I've had videos with terrible hooks do great because the content was genuinely interesting or relatable, and vice versa. Honestly, you might be better off spending that 90 minutes on the video's overall pacing and value instead of obsessing over one line.

Well now, I see this a bit differently. A hook isn't just the first line of a video, it's the whole first impression including the thumbnail, the title, and the first few seconds of footage. If you spend 90 minutes on a single sentence but your thumbnail is a messy screenshot with tiny text, that hook never gets seen in the first place. I've had videos where the hook was simple like "this is why your bread keeps falling flat" and they took off because the thumbnail showed a sad loaf next to a perfect one. Sometimes that visual tells the story faster than any clever phrase can.

Both things can be true. A good hook won't save a bad video, and a bad hook can kill a good one. 47 views means your thumbnail and title probably needed more work than your opening line. You can write the best first sentence ever but if nobody clicks to see it, it doesn't matter. Spend that 90 minutes on making the thumbnail pop and see if it changes things.
