I used to just post and hope for the best, but after my 'squirrel on a skateboard' video got 50k views and then nothing, I had to change.

Ugh that's the worst! My cat video did the same thing, blew up for a day and then total silence. It's like the algorithm just gets bored.

Wait you had a cat video do that too? Mine got like ten thousand views in twelve hours and then just stopped dead. The numbers didn't even trickle down, they fell off a cliff. It's so weird how it just shuts off like a switch got flipped.

Oh man, I feel your pain! That exact thing happened to me with a video about fixing a leaky faucet. It got like 15k views in a day and then just flatlined. In my experience, it's usually the algorithm testing the video with a small audience first, and if the watch time or engagement dips even a little, it pulls the plug. Your mileage may vary, but I've had luck resharing the same video a few days later with a different caption and thumbnail, almost like a fresh start. Sometimes the algorithm just needs a second chance to find the right crowd for it.
