A guy at the Phoenix creator meetup told me my 800k view post was 'just luck' and it still bugs me
Last October I went to a small creator meetup in Phoenix and ended up talking to a guy with about 2,000 followers who asked how I got a post to 800k views. I said it was mostly timing, a good hook in the first two seconds, and replying to the first 20 comments fast to keep it moving. He laughed and told me that stuff does not matter, it is all algorithm luck, and that anyone could go viral if the app just picked them. I tried to explain that I had tested hooks across 14 posts that month and the ones with a clear promise in the first line did about 4x better, but he waved it off. What stuck with me is that he had been posting for 11 months and had never looked at his own retention graph once. Has anyone else run into this, where people want the viral moment but refuse to look at the actual data behind it?
