Watched my kid's school science fair last month. The quiet project in the corner won. Made me rethink my whole feed.

That quiet project with the weird, patient setup always wins because judges look for the scientific method, not just flashy results. My rule of thumb from watching dozens of these things is that the kid who can explain why they did each step, even if it's boring, will beat the one who just set off a reaction. Parents get so caught up in making it look cool that they forget the project is about proving a hypothesis. Next time your kid enters, have them write down every single variable they controlled, even if the final display is just a jar with some seeds. That bread mold or slow crystal growth actually shows real data collection over time. The bake soda volcano is impressive for five seconds but teaches nothing about controlled experimentation.

That's always how it goes, right? The flashy volcano gets all the attention, but the kid who just grew mold on bread in a careful way wins the whole thing. My own science fair peak was a sad potato battery.

Remember my buddy's kid? He built a whole robot hand from straws and string, lost to a baking soda mess. Still salty about it.
