Hit 1,000 followers on Instagram but my engagement rate tanked
I finally cracked 1,000 followers on my gardening account last month. Felt great for about a day until I noticed my likes and comments dropped by half. Turns out most of those new followers came from a follow-for-follow thread I joined. Now I'm stuck with a bigger audience that doesn't actually care about my posts. Has anyone else seen this happen after hitting a milestone?

Purge was smart but samjohnson your real fans probably left after seeing all those ghost followers.

That 1,000 follower milestone hit me the same way on my hiking account. The follow-for-follow threads always feel like a quick win but they just fill your audience with people who want followers back, not your content. I ended up going back through and unfollowing a bunch of those accounts, it helped my engagement a little.

Did you actually notice a measurable difference in your numbers after you did that purge? I've been considering doing the same thing but I'm worried about losing some genuine people who just happened to follow from those threads.
