Unpopular opinion: I chose charcoal over propane for my first competition and it almost cost me
Everyone at the Austin cook-off told me to use propane for consistency, but I went with charcoal because I love that smoky flavor. I ended up running out of fuel halfway through brisket and had to borrow from a neighbor, barely made the deadline. Has anyone else stuck with charcoal and regretted it or found a way to make it work under pressure?

Did your neighbor charge you an arm and a leg for that charcoal bailout?

Oh man, that's rough. I've totally been there with the fuel panic, it's the worst feeling when you're watching that temp drop and the clock's ticking. Nothing wrong with wanting that real smoke flavor though, it's just a whole different beast when you gotta watch your supply like a hawk.
