Did your buddy ever get that trusty oven thermometer back working or did he have to upgrade? My friend Mike had a similar meltdown when his old grill thermometer finally gave out during a party - ended up having to borrow his neighbor's instant read and never got a chance to even thank the guy.

I had a $20 oven thermometer duct taped to my grill grate for three years. It finally died mid cook last month and I almost had a panic attack. Your post makes me feel like a caveman who just discovered fire.

Three years on a grill grate is a solid run for any thermometer. I've seen people manage fine without any gadgets at all, just using the hand test over the coals. The panic attack part seems a bit much for a piece of gear that costs less than a good steak.
