Why I switched from clipper guards to a shears-only fade on thicker hair

Been doing fades for about 4 years now, and I always used clipper guards for the bulk of it. But last month a customer with super thick wavy hair sat down and asked for a skin fade, and my usual guards just left these lines no matter how much I cleaned them up. I grabbed my shears instead and worked through it slowly, blending as I went. The finish was way smoother and he actually tipped me $15 extra. Has anyone else tried dropping the guards for certain hair types?

I feel you on the trust issues thing, that's rough. I've had a pair of shears for years and they still make me nervous on certain cuts, especially when I'm trying to do a precise detail trim. But I've found that if I just take a deep breath and go slow, things usually work out better than I expect. Hope you get to a good place with yours too.
