Why does nobody talk about taking too much off the crown? My mentor told me to go lighter and I kept ignoring him for 6 months

My old boss Mike kept telling me I was taking too much weight out of the crown area on fades. Said I was making the top look flat. I thought he was just being picky until I had a regular come back after 2 weeks complaining his hair looked weird from the side. I finally tried leaving more density right at the crown pivot point and the shape totally popped. Now I only take out about 20 percent of what I used to there. Has anyone else had a senior barber give advice that sounded wrong but actually fixed a big problem in your cuts?

Damn, 6 months?! That's wild you stuck with it that long ignoring him. I've been there too though, had this older barber tell me I was lifting too high on the temples and I didn't get it til like 4 months later when I saw a photo of my own cut from the back. The crown thing is real though, that weight distribution changes everything when it's wrong.

That crown pivot point thing is a total game changer once you find it. Most guys just hack away at the top not realizing it's more about distribution than actual removal.
