Waited 8 years to sharpen my own shears, big mistake

I kept sending my blended shears to a sharpening shop in Denver for $25 a pair, figured I'd wreck them if I tried it myself. Finally grabbed a 4-step stone kit from a barber supply expo and spent Sunday practicing on an old beater pair, the difference in cut quality is night and day. Anyone else put off learning their own sharpening and have a favorite system that's worth the money?

Man, eight years is a long time to be paying someone else for something you can learn in a weekend. I get the fear though, those shears are pricey and one slip feels like you're tossing money in the trash. Took me forever to even try a basic flat stone on an old pair of thinning shears, and yeah, I messed up the tooth pattern pretty bad at first. But once you get the hang of the angle and the pressure, it's like a whole new tool. Good on you for taking the plunge, it's a real game changer once it clicks.

Agree on the angle part, totally mangled my first pair too. Worth it though.
