Used a straight razor on a beard for the first time and it went sideways

Last Friday, a regular asked me to shape his full beard with my straight razor instead of clippers. I've done clean necklines with it before, so I said yes. I started on the cheek line, but the hair was way thicker than I expected and the razor tugged instead of gliding. I had to stop and switch back to my Wahl Detailer to finish. Learned that beard texture really changes the game compared to facial hair. Has anyone found a better prep method for thick beards before using a straight blade?

Come on, it's just a beard trim, not open heart surgery. Maybe try a hot towel first next time.

Feel that pain! My neck looked like I lost a fight with a cheese grater last time I tried. Those little hairs are stubborn and the razor just catches on them wrong. A hot shower before helps a ton, honestly. Still, it's never as easy as it should be.

Tried shaving a sheepdog once, same vibe.
