The day I figured out I was cutting against the grain for 2 years
About 6 months ago a older barber named Dave watched me do a fade and just said 'you're fighting the hair the whole way.' I had no idea what he meant. Turns out I was going against the growth pattern on the crown every single time because I learned from YouTube videos that never mentioned grain direction. Fixed it in one cut and the blend was way smoother. Anyone else have a basic thing click way later than it should have?

Oh man, did I do the same thing with learning how to lace my running shoes? Three years of blisters before someone showed me the right way.

Man, I felt that one in my bones! @lauras83, it's the same kind of thing where you're fighting the tool instead of working with it. My first year cutting hair I was using a cheap clipper that would pull and snag on thicker hair, so I'd go over the same spot four or five times just to get a clean line. An old timer told me to invest in a better clipper and a decent set of guards, and boom, half my problems went away overnight. It's crazy how one little piece of gear or one tip from someone who knows can save you months of frustration.
