That week in 2018 when my old mentor came back to town
He popped into my shop on a Tuesday, said he was just passing through. Ended up staying for three days, showing me how he used to do a proper straight razor shave with just hot towels and a badger brush. We must have done like fifteen of them together, and I swear my hands remembered the moves he taught me when I was nineteen. It wasn't about speed, just the quiet focus of it. I mean, you don't see that kind of service much anymore. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where an old-school technique just clicked back into place?

Yeah, that muscle memory thing is real. I get it with my grandpa's way of sharpening kitchen knives on a whetstone. He'd do this slow, even rhythm, and for years I just hacked at it. Then one day my hands just... slowed down and found the right angle. It's like your body remembers the quiet way of doing things even when the world's always telling you to go faster.

The fifteen razors in three days thing is wild but honestly I think that kind of trust in your own hands comes from having someone believe in you first. I love that your grandpa's whetstone rhythm clicked for you, muscle memory is weird like that.

Wait, you said you did fifteen straight razor shaves in three days? That's what got me. I can't get over the number. My hands would be shaking after the first two. It's not just the skill, it's the sheer focus to do that many without a single nick. That kind of patience is gone.
