Old barber told me to stop using thinning shears on curly hair
A guy who's been cutting hair for 40 years at the shop near me said thinning shears wreck the natural shape of curls and I should just use texturizing scissors. Tried it on a client last week with 3c hair and the difference was night and day, way less frizz and more even layers. Anyone else ditch thinning shears for curly cuts?

Hear me out but I actually still grab thinning shears for some curly cuts. I get what the old barber is saying, but for really thick hair that needs weight taken out without making it look choppy, nothing else works quite as fast. You just gotta use them super sparingly and never near the roots.

Man, I gotta be honest, I used to be in the "thinning shears are evil for curls" camp. But what you said about using them super sparingly really changed my mind. I tried it on a client last week with super thick 3c hair that was just a massive triangle, and a few careful snips halfway down the shaft took the weight off without wrecking the curl pattern. I was so wrong before, you just can't go near the roots or treat them like regular scissors. Now I get why some old school barbers swear by them for certain textures.

Fixing triangle hair with thinning shears is genuinely so satisfying.
