Lmao had a guy bring in a photo of his dog once. Just went for the general shape and texture, honestly. It worked out way better than you'd think.

That bit about general shape and texture is so true. You don't need a perfect copy. Like, the way a dog's thick fur can become a cool shading style, or the floppy ear shape makes a great flowing line. It becomes its own thing, way more interesting than just a photo copy on skin. Captures the feeling of the animal, not just a picture.
