I thought fades were everything until a regular asked for a simple trim

When I first got my license, I only cared about mastering the sharpest fades. I figured that was what made a modern barber stand out. Then a longtime client came in and requested a basic scissor cut, no clippers at all. I had to slow down and remember skills I learned in school but never used. Seeing how happy he was with a clean, classic style changed my mind. Now I value those traditional techniques just as much as any fade. It's like connecting back to how barbers worked before all the buzz.

Do new barbers even get taught that stuff now?

What stuff are you talking about exactly? Most barber programs still cover the basics as part of the license.

Seems like people get worked up over barber training. Is it really that big of a deal if someone learns a different way?
