Had a chat with an old-school barber about razors that got me rethinking my whole setup

I was helping out at a shop in Nashville last month, and this 60-year-old barber named Carl watched me open a fresh pack of disposables. He just shook his head and said "you kids throw away money every week." Then he showed me his straight razor he's had since 1985, still sharp as hell. Got me thinking about switching to a replaceable blade system instead of tossing plastic every week. Anyone else made the swap from disposables and regretted it or loved it?

Hold on, did Carl really show you his razor he's had since 1985? That thing must have some stories to tell. It's wild how something as simple as a shaving tool can last that long if you take care of it. I bet the trick is not just the blade but the whole routine he's got for keeping it clean and sharp. Makes you wonder how much other stuff we could keep for decades if we bought better quality upfront.

He said 1985 not 1985, that's a solid 39 years though.

Oh man, 39 years is a long time to hold onto something like that. It's tough when someone messes up a detail like that and it just sticks with you over the decades. I've got a few of those old grievances myself that still kind of sting when I think about them. Sending some solidarity your way, it's not easy letting go of those little things that just weren't right.
