Finally figured out a stubborn cowlick after two hours and three different clipper guards

Had a regular come in yesterday with this thick, coarse hair that just would not lay down on the crown. I started with my usual 2 guard fade, but the hair kept popping up. Tried switching to a 1.5, then a 1, and even used thinning shears, but it still looked off. Ended up having to cut it dry, section by section, and use a bit of paste to finally get it to sit right. Anyone have a better method for dealing with hair that just fights you the whole time?

Saw a barber on YouTube talk about using a razor on dry hair for cowlicks like that. He said clippers can sometimes make the hair stand up more because of how they cut. The razor lays it down flat as you cut. You have to be careful not to take off too much, but it gets the hair to cooperate. Might be worth trying next time you get a head of hair that fights back.

Razors on dry hair sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, @grayc27. You'd probably end up with a ton of irritation and uneven patches. Clippers might lift the hair a bit, but at least they give you a clean, even cut every time.

Angela_grant has a point about the irritation risk, but grayc27 is onto something with the technique. A sharp razor on dry hair can actually tame a stubborn cowlick way better than clippers. The trick is using almost no pressure and just skimming the surface to remove bulk. You gotta keep the skin taut and go super slow to avoid those uneven patches. It's a barber-level move for sure, not something to try when you're in a rush.
