Am I the only one who thinks fading someone bald is way harder than any design?

I was at a shop in Portland last month watching a guy spend 45 minutes on a clean bald fade. Everyone in the shop kept saying how easy it is compared to doing a detailed design. But I had to disagree right there. That smooth blend from skin to hair takes a steady hand and the right clipper setting. I messed up my first 5 or 6 bald fades before I got one right. Designs just follow a stencil. Has anyone else here found that the simple stuff actually takes more skill?

A steady hand beats a stencil every time, bald fades expose every mistake.

Man, I used to be all about using stencils for everything. Thought it was the only way to get clean lines. But after watching @nathanj56 work a bald fade freehand I had to admit he was right. That steady hand stuff really does make a difference when there's nowhere to hide a slip up.

Exactly, you can't hide anything with a bald fade, every mistake is right there in plain sight.
