Why does nobody mention the cursed week of failed sponge cakes?

I had five straight days last month where every Victoria sponge I baked came out flat as a pancake (I measured the eggs and everything). Turned out my baking powder had expired six months ago, which I only discovered after tossing three batches in the trash. Has anyone else had a run of bad luck that was actually caused by one dumb ingredient mistake?

Did you check your oven temperature too? I had a similar string of sad cakes until I realized my oven was running 25 degrees cooler than it said on the dial, which made everything sink in the middle. A cheap oven thermometer fixed it for less than ten bucks.

Whoa, @nancygrant that makes so much sense, I bet my altitude here is messing with the baking too.
