Pro tip: that $9 oven thermometer saved my bread and my sanity
My oven dial has been lying to me for who knows how long. I set it to 375 for a loaf of sandwich bread two weeks ago and it came out pale and dense in the middle, so I stuck a $9 thermometer from the hardware store on the rack and the thing was actually running about 40 degrees low. Now I check it every bake and my bread has been coming out right ever since. It stings a little that nine bucks fixed something I blamed on my flour for months. What cheap tool did you buy that turned out to be the real fix?
Bought a $6 kitchen scale after years of eyeballing flour and wondering why my bread was hit or miss. Turns out my eyeballs were the problem. I could have saved myself a lot of sad, crumbly loaves.
