My sister's one comment about my cake layers fixed my frosting game
I always struggled with cakes sliding apart when I frosted them. My sister watched me one time and said, 'you're putting warm frosting on warm cake, of course it melts.' She was right, I was rushing straight from the oven to the stand mixer. Now I chill each cake layer in the freezer for 20 minutes and let the buttercream sit at room temp for 10 before spreading. First cake after that stayed together perfectly, no sliding at all. Has anyone else had a family member point out something that obvious that you just couldn't see?

My uncle did the same thing with my pie crusts, said I was "fighting the dough" instead of letting it rest. Took me three years of hockey puck crusts before he finally said something at Thanksgiving. Now I chill everything twice and my pies actually flake instead of shattering on the plate.
