My neighbor's kid saw my lopsided cake and asked if it was a volcano.
That comment at the block party barbecue in Phoenix made me finally buy a cake leveler and watch a 20 minute video on crumb coats, so has anyone got a foolproof frosting recipe for a beginner?

Was the kid at least impressed by the lava flow of frosting? For a beginner, try the classic American buttercream. It's just a stick of softened butter, three cups of powdered sugar, a splash of milk, and a teaspoon of vanilla, all beaten together. It's pretty forgiving if you add more sugar to thicken it or more milk to thin it out.

So the kid was just staring at a buttercream volcano? Did they at least try to sacrifice a toy dinosaur to it?
