My friend in Denver said my sourdough starter looked like a science experiment gone wrong.
We were in her kitchen last fall and I showed her my bubbly jar, which honestly I was proud of. She just stared at it and said, 'Tbh, that looks like something you'd clean up with gloves on.' Has anyone else had a baking project get totally roasted by a friend?

Sounds like your friend has never seen a happy, active starter before. That bubbly, weird look is the whole point. It means it's alive and doing its job. If it looked pretty and clean, it would probably be dead. Tell her to stick to store bought bread.

Yeah, the "clean up with gloves" comment is a classic. My own brother called my first starter a jar of wet cement someone left in the sun. It's a weird hobby where success looks like a biohazard to everyone else.
