Bought a $40 silicone baking mat and it completely changed my mind about non-stick sprays

I used to swear by cooking spray for my cookie sheets. It was cheap and easy. But I kept getting this sticky residue on my pans that was a pain to scrub off. After three batches of burnt-on spray gunk, I finally bought a silicone baking mat from a kitchen supply store in Austin. It cost me $40. First batch of chocolate chip cookies slid right off with zero mess. No scraping, no soaking pans overnight. I still have to wash the mat by hand but it takes 30 seconds. Has anyone else ditched their spray for these things or am I late to the party?

My sister got me one of those for Christmas and I laughed at the price. Then I melted a spatula on my stovetop and ruined it. Had to buy another one. Now I'm on my third mat in two years because my puppy chewed the corner of the second one. They work great for cookies though, I'll give them that.

You laughed at the price but now you're on your third one? Sounds like they're earning their keep even if the price tag stings a little. I get being annoyed about melting a spatula though, that would tick me off too.

Yeah the puppy thing is rough, I had a cat that used one as a scratching pad once. But honestly the trick is to get the thicker ones, not the flimsy cheap rolls on Amazon. I grabbed a 2-pack from a restaurant supply place for like 25 bucks each and they've held up way better than the thin ones that curl up at the edges after a few uses. Also don't use them for anything above 425 degrees or they'll start to get that weird plastic smell. I ruined a good batch of roasted potatoes that way.
