Vent: chose the fancy stand mixer over a repair kit, then the motor died mid-dough

Last Saturday I picked a $450 refurbished KitchenAid instead of a $60 replacement gear set for my old one, and the new machine locked up on a stiff brioche batch, so has anyone else dealt with a mixer dying right at peak gluten development?

Wait, peak gluten development in a brioche is usually way before the motor locks up. Sounds more like the dough got too stiff or the hook jammed, not a timing thing. The real issue is you bought a refurb, those are hit or miss, and the gear set on your old one was probably a 20 minute fix. A $450 mixer dying on batch one is rotten luck for sure, but that's a warranty problem, not a gluten problem.

So was the dough actually mixed to the point where you could see gluten strands pulling, or did it just look like a normal finished dough when the motor gave out? If the hook jammed on a stiff batch, that tells you the gear set was already stripped from the previous owner. How many batches did you get out of the old one before it died?
