My oven died mid wedding cake and I finished the whole thing with a hair dryer and prayers
Last Saturday I had a three tier wedding cake due at 2pm for a couple getting married out in Napa, and my main oven decided 6am was the perfect time to just quit on me. The display went blank, no heat, nothing, and I stood there in my pajamas staring at a bowl of already creamed butter like an idiot. I called my neighbor Deb, who let me use her tiny apartment oven, which fits one 8 inch pan at a time, so I was basically baking a wedding cake in shifts. Halfway through the second tier her oven started running cold, so I rigged up a hair dryer on a chair pointed at the side of the pan to keep the crust from sinking, which sounds insane but it worked. I delivered that cake at 1:52pm with exactly one minute of setup to spare, sweating through my shirt, and the bride never knew a thing. The real kicker is my oven turned back on that night like nothing ever happened, and now I am scared to trust it for anything bigger than cookies. Has anyone else had an oven pull a stunt like this right before a big order, and did you figure out what actually killed it?
