Vent: Took me 3 weeks to figure out my bad movie night subtitles were ruining the jokes
So for like a month every Friday I host bad movie night at my place in Akron and we do classics like The Room and Troll 2, and I kept noticing nobody laughed at the best parts and I thought my friends just had bad taste. Turns out my TV was auto-turning on this "smart audio" mode that boosted the music and muffled the talking, so half the terrible line reads were getting buried and people literally could not hear them. I spent 3 weeks blaming my soundbar, then my HDMI cable, then finally bought a $40 optical cable for no reason before my buddy Dave sat down and said "dude the dialogue sounds like it's underwater." Two clicks in the settings menu and suddenly "you're tearing me apart Lisa" hit the room like a truck and everyone lost it. Now I do a quick test scene, usually the spoon scene, before anyone shows up and it fixed the whole night. If you host watch parties, check your audio settings first because I wasted almost a month and 40 bucks on a cable that's still in the bag. What's your go-to test scene to make sure the room can actually hear the bad acting?
