TIL my 'new' fence was rotting from day one

Installed cedar boards last April. By August they were turning gray and soft. Found out the lumber yard sold me 'construction grade' not 'heartwood' cedar. Anyone else get burned by cheap wood grades?

Yeah that sounds about right for "premium" lumber pricing.

You know, @alexc93, you might be onto something about "premium" pricing, but I haven't seen anyone mention the moisture content. Most folks don't realize that kiln-dried lumber sold as premium can still have 15-19% moisture. That's way too wet for interior trim work. I've had boards labeled "select" warp a full quarter inch after a week in my shop. Might be worth checking the sticker on the end before you buy.
