Shoutout to the guy at the Baton Rouge flea market who sold me a $9 soil block maker
I laughed at his table and told my wife we were not buying a plastic toy for starting seeds, because I had always used those little peat pellets and they worked fine, and then he handed me a free one and said try it and come back Sunday if it fails. Well I used that thing in a tray of damp mix on my back porch in March, and every single block held together while the pellets kept falling apart on me and costing more per plant. Now I am torn on whether the pellets are actually fine for most people and I was just doing them wrong, or if soil blocks are the real deal like he said. What got you to switch over, or are you still team pellets?
Get where you are coming from on the pellet vs block thing because I went through the same back and forth. Pellets break apart on me when I bottom water too long, so I started making my own blocks with a cheap mix and they hold up way better. You probably did nothing wrong, the blocks are just more forgiving once you get the dampness right.
